1. My PhD experience is more personal than collective. No two Ph.D. experiences are the same, and your research is unique to you. In a lab, you will most likely share a similar research area, but the content and context will be unique to each of you. You will be delving into areas of research that few others will understand. In reality, the number of people who will be able to discuss your work from all around the world will most likely fit in your workplace. I am realizing that this provides an opportunity for mastery, which is at the heart of what a PhD entails.
2. Have fun while you’re at it! Prioritize creating a reasonable routine, but keep in mind that every day may not always be the same. Be sure you schedule time for relaxation and recovery. Be creative by writing, painting, baking, filming, hiking or taking a good nap! The years spent pursuing a PhD are also an excellent opportunity to generate good memories!

3. Build a community. The connections you make during your PhD will shape your scientific perspective and worldview long after you’ve earned your title. These are people you may know already, work with them during your Phd or meet them in passing along the way. We all need a community to provide encouragement, advice, and support.
